Twenty local employers have given up their time to help students improve their employability skills as part of 'Be Employable' week held at South Devon College.
Throughout the week, employers provided invaluable advice and guidance on how to present yourself for an interview, write covering letters and CVs, and even gave mock interviews.

"Not enough work goes into preparing young people for the world of work," explained Lee Tozer, Business Development Manager at Job Centre Plus, "Preparation for employment should be built into every course – it is vital that youngsters are ready for work. We need to ensure young people are focused on their careers and what employers look for in potential employees. This is a wonderful way to help with that process."
Helen Newberry, Club Manager at Hoburne Holidays in Torbay, said: "We enjoy participating in an event like this – we're delighted to be able to advise students on how to present themselves for interview. We employ a lot of seasonal workers and an added bonus is that this event can help us to find new staff – we've already seen a couple of clued up students and have make a note to contact them with an application form."
Students who took part all wrote what they wanted to be on a leaf which they then placed on the 'I want to be' tree before their session with the employer.
Employability is at the heart of the tutorial system at South Devon College.
Mike Prudden, the College's Tutorial Manager and 'Be Employable' week organiser, said: "It is part of the College's mission to make sure that our learners leave their course with the skills and attitudes that will help them gain a good job in their chosen career. Events such as this week help learners to appreciate what employers value, so they stand a much better chance in the very competitive job market we are now experiencing. We are very grateful to the employers who have taken part in this event for their time and invaluable advice."
